Writers on Writing: a video share

Digging into our unique creative processes is essential to knowing and understanding why and how we write. Or, one could argue, create — in whatever form our imaginations and skills take us. I’ve spent time here talking about the writing process already, even started a dialogue so that you can tell me about yours! (Check it out on Writing; A Dialogue page). During my 20+ years of writing, I’ve needed to read from other writers who have shared their creative journeys. In today’s video share, a round-up of my favorite books from writers on writing.

The books I highlighted in this video are:
Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
Escaping into the Open: The Art of Writing True by Elizabeth Berg
The Faith of a Writer: Life, Craft, Art by Joyce Carol Oates

Thanks for watching! Now go to your own space — grab your favorite book and begin reading, or your favorite pen & notebook and just write. Write for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour – however long you have.  Breathe. Look around you, seeing, hearing, smelling everything. And write.

  1. When you took out Natalie Goldberg's book, I said yeah, that is my favorite book on writing too! Another very good one–surprisingly enough–is ON WRITING by Stephen King. (He doesn't tell you to write like Stephen King–lol)
